Sports Village Olympics hope
As we reported
almost exactly twelve months ago that the Sports Village was
being put forward as a possible training camp during the 2012
Games the following article has appeared in the local press...
LEIGH'S exciting Olympics bid has moved a step nearer
reality.
The town could play a major role as a training camp for the 2012
London Olympics with Leigh Sports Village as the centre point.
Speaking this week after talks with the organising London
Olympic 2012 Organising Committee, Leigh MP Andy Burnham, a
prime mover behind the LSV project, said it seemed certain Leigh
would be in the guide being produced to inform competing nations
of facilities available to them in Britain.
The Village could be chosen by one of the 200 countries
competing in the Olympics as a training base and camp.
On Monday Mr Burnham, who has close links with the organising
committee, told The Journal: "Such is the quality of what we are
building that I'm convinced that they will bite our hand off to
get us in the guide.
"It is going formally as a proposal that the Sports Village
should be used as a training camp facility. The guide deadline
is the end of this month and once we are in the guide it is up
to us to market ourselves.
"This is a magnificent opportunity to show a wider audience just
what an amazing, complete package the Sports Village will offer.
"The Village is rapidly taking shape and we believe we have a
package that will prove attractive to competing nations with
athletics, swimming and football all on-site plus educational
facilities and a hotel."
