Roads
honour for Leigh Legends
Three
Leigh sporting legends are to be honoured by having roads at
Leigh Sports Village named after them.
Tommy Sale, Jim Ledgard
and Geoff Turner will be immortalised in the addresses Sale Way,
Ledgard Avenue and Turner Way.
Wigan Council says it
was determined to ensure that the three main roads in the
village reflected Leigh sporting heroes.
Tommy Sale has devoted
much of his life to serving Leigh and its rugby teams.
The Leigh Centurions
president started as assistant scoreboard operator at Mather
Lane rugby ground at the age of eleven and became the first
post-war captain of the team.
Jim Ledgard was one of
the great rugby league full-backs of his generation and a vital
contributor to Great Britain's surprise World Cup victory in
1954. He gave his permission just weeks before his death earlier
this year.
Geoff Turner was a high
jumper and member of the British squad in the 1928 Amsterdam
Olympics.
Sale Way will be home to
the new stadium, 6th form college and sports centre.
Turner Way will, fittingly, be the address of Leigh Harriers
while Leigh East’s clubhouse will be on Ledgard Avenue.
Council leader Peter
Smith said: “We wanted to make sure that the three main streets
in Leigh Sports Village reflected local connections, and what
could be better than to name them after three of Leigh’s great
sporting heroes.”
