Olympic Hotel Gets OK
LEIGH'S Olympic hopes received a boost with news that the
135-room hotel at the Leigh Sports Village has been given the
green light.
The announcement coincides with confirmation by the 2012 Olympic
organisers that Leigh's application to be included as a training
venue has been successfully logged.
Planning consent was given to Brussels-based Rezidor Hotel
Group, who have signed up to build a mid-market Park Inn hotel
on the 80-acre Pennington Park site.
The hotel, which is expected to open in 2008, will be the first
Park Inn built by Rezidor in the north west of England and will
include spa facilities and conference rooms.
Leigh MP Andy Burnham said: "The Sports Village project just
goes from strength to strength.
"I really think it's going to put Leigh on the map and the hotel
will offer something new to Leigh.
"Leigh has a very good chance of being in the brochure which is
sent out to Olympic teams, showing them potential training
facilities.
"The hotel will be a huge boost to that bid because the teams
will have everything they could want on one site.
"A lot of people already come to the area to visit Pennington
Flash and those numbers will certainly increase with the
Bickershaw development."
Final phase
The hotel will also be able to cater for sports fans travelling
to the new 10,000 capacity Leigh Stadium, which will be home to
the Leigh Centurions Rugby League team and Leigh RMI football
club.
It will be built as part of the final phase of the Sports
Village complex, following the completion of the pool, stadium,
running track and gym, and work is expected to start in early
2008.
It is one of the first of the commercial spaces to be filled at
the Sports Village site and there are several retail units
available near the hotel.
The 135 rooms will massively increase the number of beds
currently on offer to Leigh visitors.
