Free leisure
and culture activities
Following the acclaimed free swimming schemes for the over
60s and under 16s Leigh area residents will be among the first
to be invited to sample their local leisure and cultural
facilities for nothing.
Your Free Weekend of Leisure' on September 9 and 10 is
tailored to appeal to all ages and abilities and involves sports
centres, libraries, parks and leisure venues.
Saturday's events will focus on leisure pursuits, while
Sunday's will celebrate the borough's rich history as part of
national Heritage Open Day.
The weekend also marks the second anniversary of the Trust's
Getting Wigan Active' campaign, which aims to ensure residents
have the opportunity to become more physically, mentally and
creatively active.
Chief executive Rodney Hill said: "This weekend is all about
giving people another free opportunity to get active. We are
also keen to show that being active is not just about sport, we
provide a range of services for people to enjoy, from learning
opportunities, to the arts, parks, libraries and heritage. It
will underline the huge range of activities available and we are
confident that people will take advantage of it."
There will be over 60 different free activities taking place
and highlights include: swimming for all ages gym access and
inductions for non-members multi-sports camps at leisure centres
DVD and CD hire at all libraries library activities including
Libraries in the Park' proms style concert and celebration at
Pennington Hall Park health walks, bat walks and archery dance
and tai chi taster sessions tours of the Way We Were, Haigh
Hall, the History Shop and Astley Colliery and much more All
activities are free and available on a first-come-first served
basis, although some may require booking. For further
