CENTURIONS WHEEL THEIR PLAYERS OUT IN SUPPORT OF YOUNGSTERS
LEIGH Centurions have shown their community spirit after agreeing to take part in a wheelchair rugby league game at Leigh Sports Village. Coach Ian Millward and five of his players – Steve Nash, Ian Mort, Adam Higson, Ian Ainscough and Sam Hopkins – will take on the Wigan Wheelchair rugby league club in a local derby session on Friday 21st May to kick start the weekend’s championships organised by Disability Sports Events. The Mini Games in association with LSV will be a replication of the already annual event held in Stoke Mandeville, and will see youngsters aged between 6 and 12 taking part in a variety of sports including swimming, athletics and adapted games. It is hoped it will become an annual addition to the sports village and Millward said he was delighted to be associated with the event. “We are really keen as a club to support events such as this and I think it is a fantastic opportunity for the youngsters involved. “I have nothing but admiration for the people within the D.S.E organisation and the children that participate and if we as a club can go someway to making it all the more enjoyable then so much the better.” The Wigan wheelchair rugby league club will be led by Phil Roberts, current coach of the England Rugby League Wheelchair team and he was quick to praise the Centurions for their efforts. “I want to extend my thanks to Ian and his players. They are playing three games in eight days but taking time out to support this initiative which is admirable.” The exhibition game will take place from 6pm at Leigh Indoor Sports Centre with participating youngsters then given the chance to take part in a TRY-IT session. Phil added: “I would encourage as many people as possible to come down and watch this event as I think it will prove to be a great local derby and show what an exciting sport wheelchair ruby league is.” Anyone interested in participating in wheelchair rugby league should email Phil on Phil.Roberts@rfl.uk.com
