Pitch Perfect: The Science Behind Our Surface

As part of last year’s pitch renovation, our Grounds Team worked with KAR UK to install the Hunter Irrigation System into our hybrid stitched pitch and the difference has been remarkable.

Our Head Groundsman, Keith Porter shared: “Previously, uneven watering created inconsistency in turf condition, with areas occasionally drying out and underperforming. The new system has eradicated that issue. With the old irrigation system, it was hit and miss, now it’s perfectly even. No dry patches, no burning off. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about performance and safety too. Even in windy conditions, the whole playing surface is getting what it needs. It’s transformed our matchday prep.”

Keith also recently attended the Turf Business Summit at Myerscough College through the GMA, where he joined turf professionals from across football, rugby, cricket, and horseracing across the North of England to discuss the future of sports turf management. We’re proud to share that Keith will represent Leigh Sports Village on the international stage this October at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, contributing to global conversations on turf care and innovation.
