From Pitch To Planet: Building a More Sustainable Future at LSV

We are dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint across our sports, events, health and education programmes. By embracing change, we aim to significantly lower our overall environmental impact.

In Spring 2025, we proudly received a Bronze certification from Greengage for our existing environmental and sustainable initiatives, illustrating our commitment to driving environmental change.

Over the next year, we’re setting ambitious targets to further reduce emissions, cut waste, and invest in sustainable technologies, ensuring that every matchday, training session and event supports a healthier future for our planet and community. We have defined these goals below which will help us on our journey to Net Carbon Zero status by 2038, in alignment with Wigan Council.

Our Three Sustainability Targets for the next 12 months are:

  1. Lower Stadium Electricity Consumption “To reduce electricity consumption in our Stadium, we will implement initiatives to decrease electricity usage by 10% within 12-months.  These initiatives may include upgrading our BMS controls, educating staff on electricity-saving habits, and consistently monitoring electricity usage.”
  2. Maintaining our Zero Waste to Landfill status Together with Biffa Waste, we will implement a waste management strategy that focuses on recycling, reuse, and responsible disposal. Through efficient waste segregation systems across our properties and regular audits, we will ensure that waste is minimised and diverted away from landfill. With Biffa’s support, we are continuously improving our processes to reduce our environmental impact. All of our waste streams are disposed of responsibly by our partner Biffa.”
  3. Build strong sustainable partnerships with our supply chain Within 12-months we will complete an audit of all our long-standing partners, of their sustainability policies and accreditations, to ensure we have common perspectives and standards of ethics and sustainability goals.”

Our significant measurable sustainability initiative over the next year is to:

  1. Improve Recycling Efforts We will reduce our overall general waste by introducing a comprehensive recycling program. By the end of 12-months, we will research viable recycling solutions, implement a recycling policy, and ensure all staff understand their roles in making our organisation more sustainable and increasing our recycled waste by 25%.”

Our Defined Green Targets in place are:

  1. EMPOWERING OUR TEAM We believe that real change starts from within and that’s why we are creating a culture that equips all colleagues with the knowledge and confidence to make environmentally responsible decisions. We want our teams to hold us accountable and contribute ideas that shape the future of our sustainability efforts.
  2. ADDRESSING SCOPE 3 EMISSIONS Our commitment to reducing Scope 3 emissions (those indirectly generated throughout our supply chain) will be a major focus in the coming years. We will work closely with suppliers to ensure they meet our sustainability standards, while also conducting detailed assessments to understand the full impact of our operations. By engaging with our suppliers on energy use, transportation, and materials sourcing, we will significantly reduce our overall carbon footprint and continue to lead in sustainable practices.
  3. PHASING OUT SINGLE-USE PACKAGING While we have made progress in eliminating some single-use packaging across our sites, a number of items still rely on such materials. We are actively working to source viable, sustainable alternatives for these remaining items. In the coming years, we will collaborate with suppliers and explore innovative solutions to ensure that we can fully remove single-use packaging, aligning with our commitment to Net Zero by 2038.
  4. TACKLING FOOD WASTE Reducing food waste is a key priority for us. We will collaborate with our partners, clients, and third-party suppliers to enhance our food waste management processes. By exploring new sustainable ideas we aim to minimise waste while maintaining high quality food standards.
  5. DYNAMIC TARGETS Our Net Zero by 2038 Target is ambitious, but with the passion and energy of our teams, we are confident it is achievable. However, simply meeting this goal is not enough. We will regularly review, update, challenge and set other sustainability targets to ensure continuous improvement.

When you attend Leigh Sports Village, you can help us on our journey to net carbon Zero by recycling and reducing your carbon miles by utilising more sustainable travel. You can also support locally based businesses by purchasing food and beverages through our in-house catering, or via the Hide Café at Pennington Flash. When onsite, you can conserve energy by turning off lights and electronics when not in use.

Together, we can create a greener, more sustainable future.

Thank you for your support!
